California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), also called CSU Bakersfield and/or Cal State Bakersfield, is a public university located in Bakersfield, California, was founded in 1965. CSUB opened in 1970 on a 375 acre (1.5 km²) campus, becoming the 19th school in the California State University system. As of fall 2002, some 7,700 undergraduate and graduate students attended CSUB, at either the main campus in Bakersfield or the satellite campus, Antelope Valley Center in Lancaster, California of Los Angeles County. CSUB owes its founding to the Donahoe Higher Education Act of 1960, which formalized the creation of the CSU-system, initially as the “California State Colleges”-system. In 1982 the California State College system became the California State University system and the school changed to its present name. CSUB has over 90 official student clubs and organizations (including 10 Greek Organizations). CSUB’s campus has a Student Union and an upcoming 75,000 sq.ft. CSUB is predominantly a commuter school, drawing its student body from a mix of recent high school graduates in the local area and working people returning to school or pursuing a degree part-time. CSUB is in the initial stages of building new dorms (referred to as Living Residences) on the northeast side of campus. The CSUB Fight Song and Alma Mater were selected through a structured contest initiated by the student government, Associated Students Inc. The winner of the Fight Song Contest was a current music student, Gwendolyn Wilcox, and the winner of the Alma Mater Contest was a CSUB alumnus and current high school music instructor, Bill Ingram. Alma Mater: Long Live CSUB The blue and gold stands high for honor, Thanks to all its pride. In September of 2004, CSUB adopted a new mission statement (referred to as the “Vision of Excellence”) under the leadership of the University President, Dr. Horace Mitchell.

    California State University-Long Beach History

The school that would ultimately become the California State University system was first established in 1857. Subsequent “state normal schools” were founded throughout the state during the latter part of the 19th century. These “teachers colleges” were deemed “state colleges” beginning in 1935. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, nine other campuses were established in California. In 1961, the California State Colleges system was officially founded.

The California State University system consists of 23 campuses throughout the state. Each campus operates independently, with its own president, budget, and application system.

Prior to 1960, when the existing campuses were unified as one body, the various California State Colleges existed independently of each other. The system became known as the California State University and Colleges in 1972, and as the California State University in 1982. The newest campus, on the Channel Islands, was added in 2002. There are more than 409,000 students and 1800 degree programs within the CSU system.

Campuses are located in Humboldt County (in Arcata), Chico, Sonoma County (in Rohnert Park), Sacramento, San Francisco, the East Bay (in Hayward), San Jose, Monterey Bay, Stanislaus County (in Turlock), San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield, the Channel Islands, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Northridge, San Bernardino, Fullerton, Long Beach, Pomona, San Marcos, and San Diego. The California Maritime Academy, which specializes in marine transportation, technology, and affairs, is located in Vallejo.

California State is a massive state university program with 23 campuses and approximately 44,000 faculty and staff. It is, by far, the largest university system in the country. California State offers 1800 bachelor’s and masters degree programs segmented by discipline, of which there are twenty, including agriculture, architecture, biological sciences, business, education, engineering, arts, languages, health professions, information sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, psychology, public affairs, and social sciences.

California State University offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs. There are no schools of law or medicine. Master’s level programs are offered in fields such as nursing, education, and counseling, in addition to the liberal arts and some business and technology fields. A joint doctorate with the University of California is also available through some campuses in a few fields, such as education. Extended education and certificate programs also exist. The University emphasizes liberal arts and sciences, and also supplies teacher training and certification for many of California’s school teachers.

California State University-Long Beach Unique Programs

A primary academic benefit of a system as large as CSU is that each campus has its own realm of expertise and students can find virtually any major or field of study that interests them. With so many academic offerings, the System has taken upon itself to focus on improving more non-curricular programs for student learning and engagement. These include on-line programs and courses, professional development activities, off-campus degree programs, corporate training, and test preparation.

Because the University is spread out across the state, different campuses have different emphases, usually geared to the surrounding environment. For example, Humboldt State University, which is located in the rural northern redwoods, has several programs in environmental sciences and offers a major in fisheries biology. Sonoma State University, which is located in the wine-growing region of Northern California, has a Wine Business program. Fresno State University, which is located in California’s Central Valley, has numerous agriculture programs.

Each campus has its own Financial Aid office that can assist students with the particulars associated with application at that campus. Federal programs in which the CSU system participates include Pell Grants, Work-Study, Perkins Loans, Stafford Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, and the PLUS loans for parents of undergraduates. The State of California also offers unique financial aid programs for residents of California.

    California State University-Long Beach Students

Each CSU campus offers its own unique opportunities for students to get involved. One organization that helps students keep in touch and stay organized is the California State Students Association (CSSA). CSSA facilitates communications among student groups and campuses to maintain the unity of the CSU system. Currently CSSA is the “voice” for over 400,000 students in the CSU system.

Fifteen of the CSU campuses have student newspapers that provide all CSU students with the latest details concerning their campus. Links to these newspapers’ websites can be found on the CSU homepage.
